Hands up who’s got a Linktree account?
👋🏼 yep…and me.
Why wouldn’t you? Its a fantastic idea…isn’t it?
Or should you be using Linktree?
What is Linktree?
Linktree is a landing page which allows a business (or person) to store their associated links to their various social media platforms, sales pages and offerings on one page. Like a central directory for your digital footprint.
Linktree is a freemium service which means that you can use a free version but it also offers a paid Pro version with more capabilities.
Its a place you can send people in one click to all the fabulous things you offer, links to how people can connect with you and find out more about what you do.
All for FREE! (unless you use Pro).
Its a genius concept:
👍🏼 Perfect for Instagram because currently you can only have one external clickable link on your profile.
👍🏼 Great for LinkedIn.
👍🏼 Ideal for your personal Facebook profile (necessary if you breadcrumb market – see blog) because you only need to have the one link, instead of listing all your websites/groups/offers/social platforms etc.
👍🏼 Fantastic to drop in your post captions to direct people to where they can see all you have to offer.
Why?
Why don’t we just direct everyone to our website homepage and let them wander around clicking on pages willy nilly?
Because we’re all lazy, yep…bone idle. If we can’t find it in 3 clicks we’re gone. Yes, in the world of UX (User Experience) developers, there is an unofficial ‘3 click rule.’
If users can’t find what they’re looking for in ‘3 clicks’ then they get frustrated and leave your website.
Linktree is great for directing users to exactly where you want them to go.
If you are using a Linktree profile make sure:
🌳 You only include your most relevant links, or at least make sure your spotlight links are at the top.
🌳 You keep your links up to date and check them regularly
🌳 If you are paying for the PRO version then make sure you use the branding tools so it’s recognisable as you.
The Disadvantages of Using Linktree
Lets not forget that as wonderful the concept is, Linktree is a third party platform. So you are technically creating a ‘middle-man’.
Other disadvantages are:
🌴 With the free version the branding is limited and you have to keep the Linktree logo. You don’t with the pro version but with the pro…well you have to pay!
🌴 There’s a growing concern that Instagram may mark some Linktree links as spam, making your bio link unclickable.
🌴 There is talk that Linktree can affect the curb appeal of your business, therefore negatively impacting your brand.
🌴 You’re dependant on Linktree because the page isn’t yours. Especially if you’re using the free version.
What's the Alternative?
Create your own Link.tree!
Yep…it’s just a landing page!
There is no reason why you can’t build your own landing page Linktree alternative.
If your website is WordPress, Squarespace etc then it’s just a new page.
If you use membership platforms like Kartra, Kajabi etc then it’s just a landing page (like your sales page).
Even if you use Mailerlite or ActiveCampaign, it’s just a landing page.

The Benefits?
What are the benefits of having your own Linktree alternative landing page?
⭐ It’s yours, you’re not relying on a third party site.
⭐ You’re driving traffic to your own website. More traffic helps your Google rankings.
⭐ By sending people direct to your website you are reducing clicks and therefore the risk of them bouncing before they even get to your website and what you have to offer them.
⭐ You can create a fully branded page.
Final Thoughts!
I think the Linktree concept is a great idea for those starting off who are yet to get around to creating a landing page. And it’s practical for those that don’t have a website, blog etc.
However, I do feel it’s far more beneficial if you can host your own Linktree alternative.
